Thursday 15th July

Yesterday, Wednesday, we drove up to Varkaus, about 30 minutes away, to visit Jyrki and Mari and their boys, Antti-Jussi and Ville-Veiko.
There, we had a wonderful lunch at the "jetty area", and some swimming in the lake. Jykä told me about his plans to create his own "floating sauna", which he may build next year! An ambitious sounding project, but I don't doubt for a moment that Jyrki won't actually produce a most wonderful end result, as he is a very skilled woodsman and carpenter. It'll be most interesting to see this amazing product when it's finished!
A Finnish athlete, enjoying lunch!

Having lunch at the "jetty area" along with Mari and the boys at Varkaus!

Water lilies are very common in all the lakes in Finland.

About to swim in Lake Saimaa!

Feeling full after a wonderful lunch! thank you Jykä ja Mari!

THURSDAY 15th JULY

More swimming in the lake after we got up! This morning the lake was so still, it was unbelievable, so I took a series of photos at around 9.00am which showed the reflections very well.

What a beautiful place!

Does it get any better than this?
Today we were welcoming the Ikonens to our place, so we set off for Juva early to get some things in for us all. In Juva, bought strawberries and peas at a market stall, as well as lots of meat to barbeque, and other such things as juice, ice creams, and salads.
Back at the cottage, I started the sauna early, as I had a feeling it would be well used today too!
Tom and Jykä at our place.
Relaxing on the veranda.
Jyrki, Mari, Tom and the boys arrived just after lunch, and Jyrki gave me a water thermometer to measure the water temperature of our lake. It was an incredible 28C, and everyone agreed that this was the warmest temperature any of them had ever seen! No wonder we felt it was warm!! We swam, had saunas, and swam more, with Sandy, Ville-Veikko and Antti-Jussi swimming together for ages in the water. Sandy and Ville-Veikko took more saunas than anyone, and they also swam together for ages and played badminton too.
When it came to dinner time, Tom showed he was an expert with the gas barbeque, as he prepared all the meat expertly for everyone!

There was thunder in the distance at around 4.00pm, and although it got quite dark, it didn't actually rain. It brightened up and became sunny again in he evening, with the heat continuing unabated. The Ikonens left at around 8.00pm, and we relaxed for a while, having final swims before collapsing in to bed again. A great day- thanks Jyrki, Mari, Tom, Ville-Veikko, Antti-Jussi and Elle.

Friday's water temperature = 29C- unbelievable for so far north!

This place is like heaven!
The sun sets on our first week's holiday!
Olivia has loved the water here- no wonder!
